2010-01-21 | Day 509 | 36958 km

Yeeeeees I’m in Laos! And I like it here! The Chinese-Laos border closes at 5pm, according to our guide. That is why we had to get up before 6 and start driving a couple of hours before sunrise. The first two hours of the day were horrible to ride. It just wasn’t any fun to follow the truck, from in which the guide starred into the dark and tried to find the right way. The thick morning mist and the dust whirled up by the truck created a blind film on my visor. It meant for me to open it and squint against the coldness.

We arrived at the border in the late afternoon. At the Laos side, everyone was happy about the regained freedom. No guide, no dependance no more. The sun was shining, it had 27ºC / 80ºF and everything was green. A new era has began. When I had all my luggage dragged up into a cosy room, in a very cute guesthouse, was stuffed with delicious food and sat on the edge of my bed, I felt really happy and content. All the hustle and pressure of racing through China was gone. I felt so free and even though I just arrived, I already love the people and the country.

I also realised I am now very far away from where I once started and I had quite some experiences along the way. I’m a little proud of that.
