Baw pen ny?ng – “No problem”

I read up on some background facts about the Lao culture and learnt that its influenced by Theravada Buddhism, which emphasises on cooling of the human passions. Strong emotions are taboo in Lao society. It is believed that Karma determines the events of ones life, more than hard work, prayers, or devotion.

I have spent more than a month in Laos already and I have never, not even once, had anyone be rude to me, yell at me, be angry, try to mock or annoy me. “Baw pen ny?ng”, it’s no problem. If it is Buddhism that makes everyone so chilled out, I think we could use some back home in the Western world.

Sprüche die zu einer langsameren Gangart auffordern gibt es in fast allen Ländern. Nur in Deutschland ist man der Meinung: ” Was Du heute kannst besorgen, dass verschiebe nicht auf Morgen”.

    Gute Reise !
