I have been asked a very interesting political question. Laos is a country with a socialist, one-party government with no opposition. (Sound familiar to people where I come from). And because of my background, someone thought I might be able to relate to the current situation in some places in Asia. (China, Vietnam, North Korea and Laos are ‘socialist’)

I did my best to explain how I perceived socialism, back when I was a kid, but had to give up when I was asked to compare the regime I grew up in and the current on in North Korea. “Was it as extreme back in the ex-GDR, as it is in North Korea now?” I was asked. I heard harsh things about NK, but I’ve never been there. I don’t even think, I would be let in. Should I try?
